Goodbye Rio hello llha Grande
After a very lovely but long day yesterday, we found it a struggle to get up this morning. 7am the alarm went off and then was reset for 7:30 :-p we arose from our pits to get dressed and ready for breakfast at 8am. For breakfast this morning we had exactly what we had the last 3 breakfasts and this consists of...Ham, cheese and crusty rolls x2, coffee and little chocolate cakes (very yummy, to be honest it was only me eating the cake, Andrew had watermelon) . At 8:30 we where picked up by our booked transfer to Ilha Grande.
As we got to the car we see 2 girls had also booked the same journey. We all bundled into some sort of Fiat and headed south towards the island. Along the way we see a lot of Favelas. Tried to take some pictures but things kept getting in the way.
Anyway along this journey the driver started talking to us in Portuguese. Even though we told him we didnt understand, he happily carried on anyway. After about an hour in we hit traffic. Our driver decided to take us on a detour. He was even kind enough to show us his house as we drove past. This part of Rio was actually nice. The only way we can describe the area is like the Hamptons in Worcester Park. (Posh new build, modern houses for those who dont know Hamptons) we were actually surprised that these had even been built.
2 and a half hours later we arrived in a town called something de Angreis (I cant tell you correct spelling as internet is now down...This place will be TBC). Anyway, here is where we got the boat across to Ilha Grande. when we arrived we went straight to out pre paid hostel called El Misti (they actually have a chain of places which is good). The girls who were in the car Catherine and Becky had also booked here. Once booking in and being told they dont take card is where the mini nightmare began...As we only had a litte bit of cash on us we could only pay for 3 nights. When asking do they take card and the answer being no we found we were stuck. 'Is there a bank we asked', yes on the Island you just came from (the place I dont know the name of) Sooo Andrew has now booked a ticket for tomorrow morning to get us some cash! (Silly really, why wouldnt you have a bank on a paradise island).
For the rest of the day we decided to be a bit cretive. We bought cheese slices and bread with Salami to make sandwiches. To water it down we also purchaed some beer, crisps and coke. With all this we decided to have a picnic on the beach which was nice. Just a bit away from us were some kids playing football. Whenever the ball come over Andrew would kick it back, so after about 20 minutes he got up to go join in but was told her weren't allowed. I found this highly amusing as Andrew had waited ages for the right time to get involved.
After the food and Andew not feeling so hurt we went for a trek in the jungle (oh yes, did we forget to tell you that this PARADISE Island was a large jungle) well we attempted the walk which was suprisingly nice. We got to see a squirel monkey and some vulchers eating some sort of dead caras.
For the rest of the day we spent it looking around the small town and chilling by the bar in our hostel. By dinner time we went off to make our chicken noodles in the kitchen . This took forever as there is no kettle and the water took about 25 minutes to boil on there 1960's stove.
After dinner we played a good old game of shithead with the playing cards. Andew lost first :-) an then me a couple of times. Some Germans come along to play. It was good ganging up on them!
After a few hours of playing and listening to the background music (live portuguese band) we went to bed. Bed being a 3 tier bunkbed. We both have seperate bottom bunks. Mine has all sorts of blankets and clothing tucked down the side (so no oportunists can get in) Andrew thinks I am over reacting, maybe I am but this is the only way I can sleep at night.
Anyway until another day suckers.. xx

ReplyDeleteOur first lunch in Menorca just now was ham, cheese, rolls and beer. Good to see you are following the Cherrie traditions!
Though our views were not as stunning as yours.
